Florida Oceanographic Society
Hutchinson Island

The Florida Oceanographic Society is leading the efforts in researching, monitoring and restoring habitats in South Florida, particularly in the southern portion of the Indian River Lagoon. The Marathon of the Treasure Coast is compelled to support the diligent work of the Florida Oceanographic Society as a leader in the fight to correct the negative impacts of fresh water discharges from Lake Okeechobee into our local estuaries.

The Indian River Lagoon is North America’s most bio-diverse estuary, home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals, including 36 rare and endangered species. A key component of the programs is the involvement of the community in efforts. The Society coordinates several programs in which volunteers are directly involved in research and data collection. This information is then disseminated directly to the local community. It is the hope that these “citizen science” programs foster not only knowledge, but stewardship of our treasured ecosystems in Florida.
